How I just totally survived an earthquake

Okay,  I know I already posted today. And this is not about classic movies. But ....

IT WAS AN EARTHQUAKE.

So why not post anyway?

The big deal is that we usually don't get earthquakes where I live. (In fact, the epicenter of this one was in another state but we could totally feel it). We had one last summer, but I actually slept through it... anyway, we never really get them and I didn't even THINK it was an earthquake.

I actually happened to be sitting on the floor my bedroom on my laptop and was working on that summer work when the whole bedroom began to shake, and since I was sitting on the floor (of course I would be), I could feel the whole house rattling underneath me. My dad was at work and my mom was outside, but I didn't even suspect that it was an earthquake. I looked outside the window - I don't know what I was expecting, for the ground to be shaking???

Then my mom screamed for me and I got the picture and we ran outside. By the time we got outside everything had stopped shaking, but I hadn't.

Wow. It was a 5.9 on the Richter scale, which is a lot more than the last quake, which was a 3.6 (and besides, I SLEPT through it). The funny thing was I wasn't actually scared when it started shaking -- except I feared it was going to get worse and something was going to topple over me, because we live in a pretty big house -- and only when I got outside did I start to get nervous or whatever.

Now I feel a lot better, and, of course, I had to write a Blog about it. ;)

"One night she started to shimmy-shake That brought on the Frisco quakes So you can put the blame on Mame, boys Put the blame on Mame"

What did it feel like? It felt like someone picked up our house and started to shake it like really violently, actually. Or, if you have a really old annoying washing machine like ours, it felt like when the washing machine is about to finish and it starts shaking quite badly - times like ten, though. And imagine just your whole house like that.

There are actually cracks on our driveway now because of the quake, which is.... pretty....wow.

Hmm!

Wow, that's really interesting! I'm glad you are okay. I've never been in an earthquake, and while part of me thinks it would cool to witness just a *little* one, the rest of me is scared stiff of them! 5.9 is fairly high on the scale, too, if I remember correctly. Once again, so glad you and your family are okay. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Woah. Craziness. I've yet to feel an earthquake which is strange considering where I live. Glad you're alright - I'm pretty sure I'd die if your blog ended today...or any other day for that matter.

Audrey - thanks so much :) Unfortunately it looks like we may have an aftermath, but I sure hope not! I felt surprisingly calm during it, but yeah now that I think about it's scary... anyway, at least I know what it feels like now. thanks for your kind words :)

Natalie - yeah, i know right??? And where I live we like never get this kind of stuff.... so crazy!!! We may have an aftermath, but I hope not. Aww, that's sweet of you - the same would happen to me if you ended your blog, lol! :)

Glad you made it through Rianna! I''m a Southern California gal so I am used to them, but I am sure you were not expecting it! Welcome to the shake club.

Hehe, yep it was totally unexpected :) Lol. We have relatives in Southern CA who heard it on the news and were more than happy to ring us up and say, "Join the club!" ;)

That's good to know. Not about the earthquake, but about everything being okay. I, too, live in a place where we never get earthquakes, but in 2008 we had a 3 point something tremor for about 5 seconds. Not as near as yours, but still. It was actually kind of cool :)

Yeah, in a really backwards way, it was all kind of cool... just to experience it, I guess. ;) I remember, besides the one I slept through, a little tremor a couple of years ago. But today the whole house shook so it was way more intense.

Earthquakes are really scary. I don't know if you recall the news, but we had a devastating one here in Chile in 2010 (8.1 on the Richter scale), followed by a tsunami that killed lots of people. So I know what you're talking about, that sense that the whole world seems to be falling apart and you can't do anything more than wait it's pretty awful. Glad to know you & your family are ok :)

Yes, I do remember hearing about that happening! 8.1 is really awful and especially considering the tsunami that followed it. Though ours was no where near as intense, I think it did send us all into a feeling of panic, not to mention it destroyed a little bit of a historical building in nearby Washington, D.C. And though there have been some injuries, there are no deaths. Since this 5.9 had us all shaken up, I can only imagine how awful yours must have been. Thanks so much :)
